People and places

For the Upper Lee Valley to thrive once again, the challenge is to create sustainable, economically successful communities – attractive places where people will want to live, work and enjoy their leisure. Developing successful and cohesive centres is at the heart of thIs vision.

Employment

The ULV’s strategic location in London offers great potential to create a new economic future. Building on the strength of its existing workforce, and strategic location, the ULV is well placed to accommodate significant growth in jobs. The ULV will be recognised as a place for enterprise and innovation, attracting a diverse range of business opportunities - small, medium and large. The area is developing as a location for London’s growing waste management sector.

Housing

A substantial number of housing units will be delivered within the ULV, including a significant element of affordable housing to meet the needs of London’s growing population.

Most of the existing housing stock within the ULV lies in a north-south corridor to the west of the reservoirs and the London–Stansted rail line, whilst new housing is proposed on brownfield sites around existing transport hubs and in areas of transition in the heart of the valley. Many of these sites benefit from a waterside location.

Housing development in the ULV will seek to establish sustainable communities, improving the quality of life for existing residents and attracting new people into the area. Mixed and sustainable communities will be at the heart of the vision for housing in the ULV.
